He (my flatmate - Craig) says that he saw an article in a magazine, he thinks it is Creative Review but is not sure, which said that The Big Man has left 4AD for ggod. Anyone else seen/read this? I'll have a look in the library tomorrow... Andie Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 18:50:31 +0100 From: Andrew Massey Subject: Another Computer Arts article on v23... Hi All. I know there wasn't much discussion after my initial posting about Computer Arts magazine running an article saying that v23 had split from 4ad (which surprised me), but the general concencus of opinion was that they hadn't actually "left" 4ad - Rich H even emailed me to say this, but this article is saying it again. I can't type the whole thing in (it's about 8 pages long) and I'm not near a scanner just now, but I'll quickly slip you some tasters of what is said below. I'll try and scan the article as I did before and hike it up on the Art School server for your perusal later on this week. "Splitting from 4.A.D. is a rejuvenating experience for The Wandsworth Surrealist." "As Computer Arts dropped by to pay a visit to the new premises, Vaughan Oliver, Chris Bigg and Tim Vary were busy lugging drawing boards and Macintoshes, boxes of vinyl...." "It marked the end of perhaps the most innovative, productive and celebrated alliances between a record company and its design team as v23 split from successful independent record label 4AD." : Nice images of Mandalay's "Empathy" LP (Bigg and Friedman work) - V2 records. "The new set-up means that Oliver and long-standing design partner, Bigg, are now business partners too..." "The postcode may have changed, but try saying 'The Battersea Surrealist' out loud. It doesn't work..." "With this background, and ably partnered by Bigg, Oliver will still always get his hands dirty - both literally with traditional paste-up techniques, and, increasingly, using computers himself for manipulation and layout."
