Ui is a band from New York City and Trenton, New Jersey. Ui was formed
in 1991 by bassist Sasha Frere-Jones and drummer Clem
Waldmann. Bassist Alex Wright and David Weeks, who played turntables
and tapes and percussion, were in the original version of Ui. (Alex
Wright and David Weeks left the group in 1993.) Bassist Wilbo Wright
joined in 1993. Tony Maimone and David Linton have both played with
the band. Darryl Moore of Soul Static Sound Records sometimes plays
turntables with the band.

Sasha Frere-Jones: Fender Jazz bass, Fender Telecaster bass, Yamaha
bass, Gibson SG guitar, EML 101, Korg MS-10, Roland SH-101, Roland
Juno 106, Roland TR-808, Electro Harmonix DRM-15, banjo, sequencing,
electronic percussion.

Clem Waldmann: Leedy and Gretsch drums, acoustic percussion. 

Wilbo Wright: Fender Jazz bass, Fender Precision bass, Hagstrom bass,
Korg MS-20, Rhythm Ace, Univox Rhythm Unit, acoustic/electric vertical
bass, acoustic double bass, banjo, recorder, piano, tuba, toy piano.

Clem plays drums in an instrumental band called The Kustard Kings,
which backs up singers doing famous songwriters' material at a monthly
event in New York called Losers' Lounge. Clem became one of the
drummers for the Blue Man Group "Tubes" show in the fall of 1995. Clem
is originally from Detroit, Michigan and lives now in the East
Village.

Wilbo joined Ui in early 1993. He lives in Trenton, New Jersey with
his wife and several cats. He is a tree farmer and a jazz musician. He
has toured with Yo La Tengo, Chris Harford, Marc Ribot and others. He
leads a band called the Tibetan Bowlers, a free improvisation
band. Wilbo was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey.

Sasha remixes, records and DJs under his own name (or as The
Calvinist) and runs a label called Bingo with Amy Hersenhoren. He was
born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He lives in Manhattan with his
wife Deborah K. Holmes, their son Samuel Frere-Holmes and their dog,
Deacon.



UI HISTORY, as told by Sasha Frere-Jones on behalf of Ui: 

I was in a band from 1986 to 1991 called Dolores. The band consisted
of two bassists, one guitarist and a drummer. The personnel for that
band was: Frere-Jones, bass, guitar, vocals; Alex Wright, bass; Tim
Thomas, vocals, guitar, trombone; and Dave Reid, drums. Ui was formed
on May 12, 1991. Later that year, Dolores played its last show on
September 29 at the Knitting Factory. I had seen drummer Clem Waldmann
at Dolores shows in New York. He was tall, so I remembered him. When I
found out Clem played drums, I asked him to play. I asked Alex from
Dolores to be the other bassist and we invited our friend David Weeks
to make sounds. He played turntables, tapes, and a Casio VL-Tone
calculator/drum machine, the latter featured prominently in "Horn
Crown Label" from the first EP. The first Ui gig was January 16, 1992
at The Pyramid Club.

David left the band in 1993 before we had recorded anything. Alex
Wright also left the band that year, and Tony Maimone took his place
as second bassist for several months. At some point, David Linton
added samples to our live show, which he triggered from his position
at the sound board, as he was doing our live sound. Wilbo was
recommended to us by David Linton, who had seen him play with Marc
Ribot. Wilbo joined the band in 1993.

Justine Wolfenden saw Ui play at Brownies on May 16,
1992. Aftwerwards, she suggested that Ui record a single for her
label, Hemiola. "The 2-Sided EP" was recorded in July of 1993 and
released in December of 1993 on Hemiola. Tortoise invited us to do a
short tour of the northeast and midwest US in the spring of 1995 with
them and Labradford. As part of that tour, we came to Chicago and met
Southern records.
