Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 11:43:08 -0400 From: Margaret Fiedler Subject: Laika/Tricky EP I think it was around November 1994 Too Pure got a call from Tricky sayin= g he had heard our album and wanted to know if we would like to do somethin= g together - being massive fans of his first few singles we thought we'd gi= ve it a go, even though Guy and I don't really like collaborating with anyon= e but each other. We went round to Tricky's flat for two nights and worked= on some basic tracks - some of the samples I've since heard on later Tric= ky stuff. I seem to remember that one of the working titles was "No Cow" - there was a sample that sounded kinda like a cow mooing and Tricky got a bit fixated on it - a "get the fuckin' cow outta here" vibe. The sample went - hence "no cow". But unfortunately we were too stoned to finish anything! He can smoke a _lot_! He also wanted me to sing a Siouxsie (!= ) cover - someone else ended up doing it instead on the Nearly God LP. We had a lot of phone calls back and forth about finishing things, but never= were able to coordinate our schedules (the original two nights were durin= g the only 4 days off we had during a 4 month tour - when we had a little time free in early '95 Tricky had begun to promote Maxinequaye). So the collaboration fizzled out - as a consolation prize we ended up touring th= e US and Canada supporting Tricky in September 1995. Other collaborations that didn't happen - we were gonna collaborate with Roni Size (long story) but when it transpired that all he wanted was a vocal we turned him down as I'm pretty wound up about not being just a singer - I do my own engineering, sampling, production etc. Maybe Laika would've been heard by a lot more people if I wasn't so damn principled..= =2E = If I had done it it would've been on the New Forms album... Anyone heard the PJ Harvey/Tricky new single? I think they're gonna be o= n Later next week (UK only).
