Originally even intended to be the B-side of 'Anitina' !!! (check the 'double A-side' sleeve of the original BAD 707 12" and compare it with the BAD 707 R remix 12"). Although it was first released back in 1987 there must be quite a few CD version around (USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, France, ...). I only have the 2 UK versions: 'Pump Up The Volume' BAD 707 CD (September 1987) 1. Pump Up The Volume (Re-Mix) 2. Pump Up The Volume 3. Anitina 4. Anitina (Re-Mix) The gate-fold cardboard sleeve has the same (green/copper) design as the remix 12". 1. and 3. are also on the Japanese '4AD '12 Inch 87 Anthology' CD (CY-4415). 'Pump Up The Volume' BAD M 707 CD (September 1993) 1. Pump Up The Volume 2. Pump Up The Volume (Re-Mix) 3. Anitina Digipak. Design totally different to original CD, using images from the original 12" frontcover. (There is a version of 'Pump Up The Volume' on 'Lilliput' too) Frank Date: Sat, 6 May 1995 06:34:28 -0700 From: shane (shane@TREX.ORG) Subject: Re: M/A/R/R/S Pump Up The Volume >How many different album, single. and eps are there in CD format >of this piece of music? It included the four tracks of the two different UK 12"s. At about the same the Canadians issued a CD using the same packaging (4.A.D/VERTIGO, 870 210-2) with six tracks (five mixes of Pump, one of Anitina). The Japanese put out two versions: 4.A.D/COLUMBIA, 20CY-2280 with 4 tracks and 4.A.D/COLUMBIA, 15CY-5012 with two tracks. The former had a sleeve design similar to the UK CD issue, the latter resembled the design of the regular UK 12". Both came in slim jewel cases and featured all the stuff that usually comes with Japanese releases. Finally, there is the US version on 4th & BROADWAY, CCD 452; this included five tracks (four versions of Pump and one of Anitina) and came in a card sleeve using the design of the regular 12". All these should long be deleted. In 1993 4AD reissued the CD. This time it came in a digipak and included only three tracks (two versions of Pump, one of Anitina). This one should still be available. In identical form this was released in Germany (4.A.D/ROUGH TRADE, RTD 120.1860.3) and probably Belgium (Play It Again Sam, ???????). France put out two versions: 4.A.D/VIRGIN, 922492 with two tracks in a card picture sleeve and 4.A.D/VIRGIN, 922312 with four tracks in a digipak (identical to the UK release). Ralf Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 11:08:41 BST From: Steve Hipkiss Subject: M/A/R/R/S BBC2 had a Radio1 celebration on Saturday evening, one of the programmes being about one hit wonders. M/A/R/R/S got a mention, but it seems they are likely to go down in history for allegedly nicking samples from the Pete Waterman hit, Roadblock. Pete Waterman was saying they had nicked the scream from the beginning of his song and Ray whatsit, ex-manager, was defending M/A/R/R/S saying Pete Waterman was only doing it to keep Rick Astley as no.1, having received a writ in the week that M/A/R/R/S was no.2 not to sell any more copies. I don't know if this was an old programme revised or completely new, but it seems strange that Pete Waterman still has hang-ups about this. Things with 4AD and Colourbox must have faired better as Martyn Young did lots of post-Colourbox remix work for 4AD. I saw Colourbox founder Ian Robbins touring with Modern English in '96. Is he with the '97 touring model?? There should be a lawsuit section in the FAQ. Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 15:33:09 -0400 From: Jeff Keibel Subject: American Dreaming During the month of July, 4AD US unleashed a batch of releases, some reissues, some things that were deleted for a while and some brand new stuff as well. The following is a critique of these specific releases and how they were handled in a reissue context. The music itself is amazing of course... Sound quality on all is good. M|A|R|R|S : Pump Up The Volume EP No cat. number aside from bar (5263707072) and matrix (4AD707). A fine choice for an American reissue since the 4th & Broadway/Island version has been gone for a long while. The resulting product suffers from the fate of the Bauhaus disc, only worse. Using the graphics from the 1993 UK digipack reissue in a jewel case setting, the art had to be rejigged to fit but looks fine. Three tracks are listed, as per the UK BADM707CD while two additional "Pump" mixes are added but NOT listed. This is really badly executed. The credits only list info for the three listed tracks as well. The graphics really should have been redone if more tracks were to be added. M/A/R/R/S Pump Up the Volume CD-5 (4AD) Seminal one-off collaboration between 4AD's Colourbox (brothers Sean and Martyn Young) and A.R. Kane. "Pump Up The Volume" is the label's most successful and well-known single, crossing over to the pop, alternative and dance markets. The song was a musical departure from each group's usual sound but combined their mutual love of sampling, dance music and hip-hop to create this track that ruled the airwaves in 1987. Sampling Eric B. & Rakim's classic "Paid In Full" and Yeminite songstress Ofra Haza was genius, but they would later run into legal complications (this was released before sampling credit laws were defined). This reissue includes all four mixes of the single plus the amazing B-side, "Anitina (the first time I see she dance)." --Craig M. Roseberry
