But basically for me, it's usually _Medusa_, or nothing. The first 4AD album is pretty good, but I can only stand "A Day" and (even worse) "Stranger" for short times. I never liked New Order that much... :) brant no sig today Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 12:24:13 -0400 From: Aaron Hill Subject: Clan of Xymox New Single I picked up the new Clan of Xymox single Out of the Rain today. I was pleasantly surprised. I had heard they were returning to their roots (actually I should say he since it is only Ronnie Moorings work). Plus, they added CLan of back to their name and it is on Tess records (a cool goth label). After Phoenix (which only had a few good songs), I decided I did not like Xymox's new electronic material (which seemed too upbeat and shallow). Well, there are only 3 songs on this single. I love Out of the Rain which reminds me of Xymox's first 4ad album quite a bit. THe next song is Going Round 97' which is ok (actually many like it, but it has muffled vocals and that bothers me), and the third track Flatlands which is instrumental (although I don't care for most instrumentals, this is one of the better ones--very dark and Medusa like). I am once again excited about Clan of Xymox and look forward to the new album, Hidden Faces. (released May 1996) The music however is not representative for the new album of Xymox to be released soon All tracks are instrumental " purpose made" for the"Total Mayhem" game. The new album of Xymox will sound like their earlier works on 4-AD and a complete departure from what they have released in the early nineties.(Metamorphosis,Headclouds). We will let you know when it will be released as the band is still working on the recordings. Someone else responded that Anka and Pieter have not returned to the fold, so it's still just Ronnie. You can definitely tell. With the exception of the third track, the instrumental, you'd have a hard time finding any musical similarities between the "Out of the Rain" CDS and anything on either _Clan of Xymox_ or _Medusa_. "Out of the Rain" isn't a Clan of Xymox album any more than "Metamorphosis" is. Is it irresponsible of Tess records to trade on the name? You bet. In short, if you're like me and feel that the only two releases worth having are _Clan of Xymox_ and _Medusa_ (OK, and _Lonely Is an Eyesore_, for "Muscoviet Mosquito"--oh, and _Sleeps With the Fishes_, of course), then stay far away from "Out of the Rain." And I'd be very skeptical of the full-length, though I'll reserve judgment until I hear more. -Steve Landau Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 19:46:43 -0500 From: John Roseborough Subject: news from (Clan of) Xymox There's finally some detailed info, from Ronny himself, on Xymox's downward spiral (that's my word choice, not his) since "Twist of Shadows". Check out this recent interview with Ronny: http://www.cybercomm.nl/~xymox/faq.html He also explains why he, Pieter and Anke parted ways, the meaning of the band name, the current lineup, why they chose Tess Records, etc.. I would quote the thing, but it's massive so I'll spare those of you who don't think they're "thislisty" anymore (and to be kind to those of you who still use 2400 baud modems). Date: Fri, 14 Nov 1997 03:00:57 -0600 From: "Jose A. Garcia Camil" Subject: Clan of Xymox Concert! Who says that redemption is not possible? Ronny Moorings, of Clan of Xymox just discovered it tonite. After too much gossip about COF return to their 4ad days, one had to see it to believe it. After being hook on Xymox's music since the Medusa album (one of the BEST 4AD releases of ALL time... Brant N. help me with this) I decided to see them at the Atomic Cafe in Austin, Texas. Since no friend of mine likes the music we like in this list, I went alone to the concert. The opening act, Numeralia, was good; reminiscent of An April March... effective but not worth dying for. After them (and a couple of drinks later) came This Ascension (also on Tess Records)... OK, kind of a mixture between the Cocteaus and any other band w/female vocals on it. Then the wait came... I went to buy some stuff and talked to the promo director for Tess Records, Antrome. I asked how true the new Xymox sound. He said that Ronny first went to 4AD but he disliked the way Ivo was running the label: i.e., the new roster. I asked him what happened with Anke and Pieter; about Anke, he said that she didn't like the new sound since she was "hooked" on disco music... she's supposed to live in NY and enjoying a fruitful life. Antrome didn't say much about Pieter except that he's making music somewhere outthere in the world. After this conversation, I found fellow 4AD listie John Roseborough which I did not see since the SWXSW festival in march. After talking a lot and expressing our mutual admiration for Xymox, the lights finally went out and Ronny and Co. (including new bassist Mojca... VERY cute) came out! I was (next to John) on first line. The set list was as following: Stranger Cry in the wind Muscoviet Mosquito This World Out of the rain Louise Craving Story Ends Back door A Day Michelle Going Round 97 (*cheers, desperation, cries of encore*) Sing a song Hypocrite Obsession As you can see, the 4AD songs were very important in this show. The best songs from the concert were, IMO, Lousie, A day, Muscoviet Mosquito, Back door, Michelle and Obsession. The new somas were very good EXCEPT an awful song called Hypocrite. You could feel how excited Ronny was when he sang all the old ones. The crowd went, of course, berserk with the early material. As a final thought, if Xymox goes to your city or town, donīt hesitate and see them live. They donīt play the techno-shitty stuff of the past two albums and you get a well deserved dose of 4AD classic material. I hope I didnīt bother with such a long email.
