Didn't we go through this about a year and a half ago? ;G) Here's what I know... Brook invented the infinite guitar himself, probably because he loved the sound of the E-bow, which magnetically vibrates a guitar string without actually touching it (a well-known example of this sound is that high-pitched "whistling" melody line at the beginning of U2's "With Or Without You"). Perhaps he was frustrated at its relative cumbersomeness and/or because the player can only use the device on one string at a time. I believe he took a Stratocaster, removed one of the pickups, and replaced it with a pickup-sized device which works the same way as an E-bow. Anyway, it's sort of hard to explain, especially for someone like myself with such little knowledge of electronics. I don't know how much of the actual design and construction of the infinite guitar was done by Brook, or whether he was assisted by anyone...but supposedly, there are only three (?) other infinite guitars in existence, which are owned by (I think) The Edge, Daniel Lanois, and Brian Eno. Any corrections would be most welcomed, as I'm rather fascinated by Brook's work in this area. But I've bee= n=20 known to be wrong before. btw Michael Brook and Brian Eno worked on Jane Siberry's album of 1992/3, "= When=20 I was a Boy" - it's great and some of you 4AD people should give it a=20 spin...(Michael employs his infinite guitar on one of the tracks, which is = why I=20 mention this) Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 07:30:23 -0500 From: o_o_o Subject: Re: infinite guitar Guitar: Tokai Strat with standard Seymour Duncan Pickups and origianl Floyd Rose double locking vibrato system Modified with infinite guitar box that generates electromagnetic feedback providing continuous sustainable tones also see: http://www.columbia.edu/~co61/brook/index.html unofficial michael brook webpage. has a more detailed description of infinite guitar.
